A mature tree can add shade, beauty, and value to a Florida property. During a hurricane, however, a weak limb, decayed trunk, or failing root system can turn that same tree into a serious hazard. This hurricane season tree checklist helps Tampa Bay property owners spot concerns early, make sound decisions before high winds arrive, and know when a certified arborist should take a closer look.
No tree can be made hurricane-proof. Healthy trees can still lose limbs in extreme wind, and saturated ground can cause even large trees to uproot. The goal is not to over-prune or remove every tree near a house. It is to reduce preventable risk while preserving the health and structure of the trees that make your property feel like home.
Hurricane Season Tree Checklist: Start With a Ground-Level Inspection
Walk your property in daylight and look at each tree from several angles. You do not need to climb, probe cavities, or make a diagnosis yourself. A careful visual inspection can still reveal warning signs that deserve professional attention.
Start with the trunk. Fresh cracks, large cavities, peeling bark, mushrooms at the base, or a seam where the trunk appears to be splitting can point to internal decay or structural weakness. Avoid topping, which means cutting back major branches or the upper portion of a tree to leave blunt stubs. Topping may seem like a quick way to reduce height, but it commonly leads to decay and weakly attached sprouts that fail more easily later. Hurricane preparation should improve a tree's natural structure, not create new problems.
Do Not Wait on These Warning Signs
